Senior Manager, Senior Counsel–Privacy and Data Protection Law

McLean, VA

The attorney in this position will join our growing enterprise privacy legal team and support our newly established Data Ethics and Privacy Office. Working closely with business, compliance, and risk partners across each of Capital One’s lines of business, you will be a go-to resource across the company on privacy, data protection, and related legal issues and help us as we implement new regulations, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). You will operate at the intersection of financial services and technology, and you will brainstorm, problem-solve, and innovate to assess and mitigate legal risk in a challenging and evolving space.

We are looking for an attorney who is collaborative, inquisitive, enthusiastic about privacy and technology, and exhibits grounded judgment in novel situations. You’ll need strong analytical and organizational skills, great judgment, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision, large volumes of work, and complex legal issues that may arise suddenly. We want someone with an ownership mentality but who enjoys being part of a team and can interact with and influence across departments and job levels. A good sense of humor and enthusiasm for privacy and technology issues is a must!

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide expert advice on applicable privacy laws, including GLBA, GDPR, and CCPA.

  • Analyze and interpret proposed laws and regulations impacting business units and assist in devising compliance methods that meet business goals and objectives.

  • Manage outside counsel regarding US privacy and data security matters.

  • Review and analyze new products and services, including online and mobile applications, for compliance with applicable privacy laws.

  • Advise and influence executives and other associates regarding the impact of federal and state privacy and data security statutes and regulations.

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of legal experience in a law firm, public interest organization, or the government

  • Juris Doctorate degree

  • Membership in good standing in at least one state bar

Preferred Qualifications

  • A background in privacy law is a plus but is not required

  • Previous experience in government or in-house

  • Experience with legal issues involving technology
