Alejandra Campoverdi is a women’s health advocate and bestselling author of First Gen: A Memoir, which was released in September 2023. First Gen, which she started working on in 2021, is her professional highlight from the past year, while her personal highlight was being able to share that moment with her family and especially her mother.
Campoverdi previously served in the Obama White House as the first White House deputy director of Hispanic Media. She also produced and appeared in the PBS documentary Inheritance, as well as founded the LATINOS & BRCA awareness initiative in partnership with Penn Medicine’s Basser Center for BRCA. Campoverdi earned a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California.
How does your Latino heritage influence you as a leader?
My culture, heritage, and background is inextricably linked to my identity as a leader.
Outside of work, what are you passionate about and why?
My health advocacy/cancer awareness work through the initiative I founded with Penn Medicine (LATINOS & BRCA), and my board work for the California Community Foundation. And I love to spend time in nature and hike any chance I get.
The Alumni Society’s theme of this year is Leadership for a Changing World. What does it mean to you to lead in a changing world?
Keep asking questions, stay open, and support the next generation of leaders.
What major changes have you observed in your industry over the past year?
The increasing pride in publicly owning all the things that make us different, in various forms of media, is a welcome change to the one dimensional narratives of the past.
What are you doing to ensure you remain a nimble and adaptable leader during these changing times?
Trusting in my intuition to continue to guide me to the places where I can make the most impact.
