About the Position

The Corporate Tax Director position will report to Senior Vice President – Corporate Controller & Principal Accounting Officer. The Corporate Tax Department performs the efficient execution of tax accounting, disclosure, and compliance obligations, and provides value added tax advice to Freddie Mac’s business areas. This role will be responsible for all aspects of the firm’s corporate tax liability and is involved in the development and implementation of effective tax strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Complying with tax reporting requirements of various governing bodies in a manner that does not expose the firm to late and incorrect filing penalties, as well as tax provisions in monthly management accounts and year-end financial statements
  • A key responsibility of this role is the development/option (and presentation to the firm) of tax effective and technically robust strategies that minimize the firm’s tax liabilities
  • Establishing operational objectives and work plans, and delegating assignments to subordinate managers
  • Involved in developing, modifying and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect
  • Working on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives
  • Implementing strategic policies when selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
  • Establishing and assuring adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements
  • Regularly interacting with senior management or executive levels on matters concerning several functional areas, divisions, and/or customers
  • Working closely with Freddie Mac business areas to provide timely, value added support in the application and understanding of tax accounting methods for related business transactions and the execution of tax accounting or tax compliance processes
  • Preparing or supporting GAAP accounting and disclosure related to federal income taxes
  • Providing execution or tax technical expertise to support the Tax Department’s analysis of transactions and/or the selection of appropriate tax accounting methods
  • Leading or providing tax technical support in the filing of federal income tax, partnership, or information returns
  • Working closely with IRS examining agents, advocating and defending tax positions, responding to inquiries, and coordinating activities with the examining agents, Tax Department, and/or Freddie Mac business area personnel

Qualifications

  • 10-12 years of related work experience, ideally federal tax compliance experience
  • Management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, related field or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of Excel and tax software such as OneSource or CorpTax
  • Thorough knowledge of tax and accounting laws; may be required to liaise with external parties

  • Knowledge of the secondary mortgage market and accounting for related items such as mortgages, mortgage securities, debt, or derivatives
  • CPA and/or Master’s degree in tax
